How to make a positive contribution to the world

On the occasion of European Union's Golden jubilee year, the then President of India, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam gave one of the most inspiring speeches in World History. Through this thought provoking speech, he yearned for World peace and prosperity. One of the best excerpts from his speech:
"Righteousness is the beginning.
What we need is a carrier of eternal goodness and wholesomeness in human conduct, which is ‘Righteousness'.

            As we say in India:

Where there is righteousness in the heart

There is beauty in the character.

When there is beauty in the character,

There is harmony in the home.

When there is harmony in the home.

There is an order in the nation.

When there is order in the nation,

There is peace in the world.
This is true, for the whole world. When we need peace in the world, we need order in the nation; we need harmony in the home, whether in Europe or in India or in any part of the world, the origin is righteousness in the heart."

If you really want to effect a positive change in this world,

if you really want to help people, improve their lives,

if you really want to make this world a better place,

the most important thing, is what you have inside of your heart.

The words you talk, the ways you present are important, but

they are just special effects in a way.

The most important thing, is what you have inside of your heart.

If your heart is really pure,

if you really come from the right place, without ego,

then you will get all the help you can from above.

The sky will open,

and you will know exactly what to do, when to do it, how to do it, and with whom to do it.

Depends on the scale. Large scale improvements are difficult because the larger the scale, the more complex the situation gets. Simple efforts tend to be easiest to help everyone in at least one way or another. One suggestion is to start simple and work up. Help the people become better around you through simple means, but also study to improve the world in a specific way. Nobody can make a ‘miracle improvement' because we only live about 100 years! Make strategic advances to help contribute to solving a bigger problem, but the big problem doesn't necessarily need to be solved at once. As I said, problems are complex; we need to take small steps to untangle things like world hunger, poverty, etc., as these are some of the most complex issues in the current era. If the issues are too complex, improve the conditions for everyone around you because you're still making life better regardless. (:

You must be looking for a specific suggestion... because common sense says that you just do positive things for the people around you.

Give a homeless person food, and you've made a positive contribution to the world.

Pick up litter on the street, and you've made a positive contribution to the world.

Walk or take the bus instead of driving your own car, and you've made a positive contribution to the world.

Adopt a child instead of having one of your own and you've made a positive contribution to the world.

Listen to someone with troubles, and you've made a positive contribution to the world.

Do something good without expecting a return, and you've made a positive contribution to the world.

... this is the point where you respond back with "What I mean Is."

I am a bit pessimistic about the world.. It has a great momentum and it is really hard to have a lasting good impact on it.. Possibly in smaller area.. The history of man was getting in newer and newer "vehicle", new solutions and we can run out of them after a time.. First we used wood, water power, coal, gas, oil, nuclear, wind, solar but what do we have left???
