Is California becoming an empty state?
What do you mean, "empty state"? California is the most populous state in the country. It is a destination state. People visit and want to move here. When we were looking to buy a house, it seemed as if the majority of sellers that were moving out of state were red voters. Good riddance, I say. There are many blue voters leaving, too, and I hope they help turn red and swing states blue. I meet folks fleeing the ignorance and racism of some of those states and love every minute of it here despite the high cost of living.
Who cares about having huge houses filled with unnecessary crap, and useless trinkets and tchotchkes! Who needs fossil fueled toys! We can go sailing instead of power boating, windsurfing instead of water skiing, and mountain biking instead of dirt biking! We can surf, hang glide, cross-country ski, canoe, kayak, and hike! And we'll have just as much fun with a lot less expense.
Sure we have our problems, but that's the price we pay for being the most desirable state to live in. We attract millions upon millions of out of state visitors who drive on our roads and use our services but pay no income taxes to our state, only a pittance in sales and fuel taxes before they head home. Many of them live in states that benefit from California paying $1.20 per dollar in federal income taxes for every $1.00 we receive in services. Many of those visitors end up returning to live here, again, despite the high cost of living.
I certainly hope we can find a way to secede from the US someday. We could then throttle the masses who want to move here to a manageable rate and let anyone who wants to leave, leave. We will do just fine.
We have world class universities, architecture, museums, national parks, professional sports teams, music, theater, international airports, and sea ports. Energy will be clean as we will lead the US in the race to switch permanently from fossil fuels to renewable green energy from the sun, wind, and ocean. We have Silicon Valley, Hollywood, ocean, mountains, and deserts. Jerry Brown left a $6.1B surplus for Gavin Newsom. Our reservoirs are full. And, the US would have less blue EC votes, House and Senate members. See, it's a win-win situation. Maybe Oregon, Washington, and Hawaii will join us. You can all can just keep moving right with hate, bigotry, misogyny, xenophobia, homophobia, and racism. You can all keep burning fossil fuels until your skies turn brown like Beijing.
Pipe dream? Maybe, but some polls had 1 in 3 of us in favor of secession. It will come up again, especially if the Democrats put up Hillary again, or Joe Biden, or one of any other center-right establishment Democrats against trump. Bernie seems to be on the receiving end of a lot of negativity from center-right Democrats, but if it wasn't for him in 2016, that party would never have started to change their tack back to port as it seems to be doing.
California an "empty state"? Hardly.
