Is it a good idea to go jogging in the morning, before having breakfast?

Exercising on an empty stomach may increase your weight loss success. This is the conclusion of a study conducted in Belgium on a group of young men over the course of 6 weeks. They were divided into 3 groups: sedentary, workout post breakfast, workout before breakfast. To make things interesting, they were instructed to increase their daily caloric intake by 30%, and their daily fat intake by 50%!!

After 6 weeks, the couch potatoes gained weight, as expected. The group exercising post meal also gained weight, but not as much. The group that exercised before eating did not gain any weight. (Note that this is not the same as losing weight.) As an added bonus, this group continued burning fat throughout the day. Their blood sugar and insulin showed the best results as well.

The findings of this study contradict the current recommendation to eat something light and easily digestible (carbs) before exercising. The only way to know what's best for your body, is to test what you feel works for you. if you train without eating beforehand and feel lightheaded, dizzy or nauseous, this is not the right approach for you. If all you need before going on an easy 3 mile run is a cup of water, that's great too. As long as you eat healthy and find time for exercise, you're doing the right thing.
