>> The Bible is really confusing me, most especially the Genesis (creation story). should I just pretend like I understood?
No need to pretend, it's really very simple. What part of creation do you not understand? I would be happy to help you with it.
Bottom line is, modern "science" is simply wrong. God created everything there is in 6 literal 24 hour days. And He did this about six thousand years ago. All that information is in the Bible and is clearly spelled out.
Don't be brainwashed by all the atheists and scoffers who claim we all evolved from some primordial soup (which came from the rocks) billions of years ago. They have no proof of that, they only believe it.
And that makes it not science; rather that makes it a religion just as much as Christianity is. They have faith that's how it happened. They have faith in all their textbooks and trust that they're correct.
But they have no direct evidence or proof whatsoever...so there's absolutely no reason to deny the creation account as spelled out in the Book of Genesis.
The Bible is 100% correct on the creation account and there is no scientific reason whatsoever to reject the Bible. The scoffers reject it because they want to reject it...it is not due to lack of evidence.
They just don't want to believe there's a God; so they made up a fairy-tale about where we all came from.
2 Peter 3:3–7
3 Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires.
4 They will say, "Where is this ‘coming' he promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.
5 But they deliberately forget that long ago by God's word the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water.
6 By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed.
7 By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.
Read John Simpson's answer which is very good. Read Bob Triez's answer which is very good. Read Genesis 1–11 of the Bible for the true ancient history of the world before God scattered people all over the earth and gave them different languages. Because it was before all this, all people all over the world have the SAME ancient history. It is recorded all over the world as well, not just in the Bible. There are stories of the worldwide flood and the Tower of Babel all over the world independent of each other. This is also true, to a lesser degree, with Adam and Eve and creation.
I want everyone reading this to know that Adam and Eve truly are real historical people and the ancestors of ALL humans that have ever lived.
The Bible is God's Word and it is CLEAR from the Bible that they were REAL Historical people and the ancestors of EVERY HUMAN BEING.
Genesis 2 documents God creating Adam from the dust of the earth.
1 Corinthians 15:45–49 states: "... The first man, Adam, became a living being... The first man came from the earth, a man of dust... Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the man of heaven."
Romans 5:15 "...For if by the transgression of the one the many died, much more did the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many."
1 Corinithians 15:21–23 "For since by a man came death, by a man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive."
Jesus also refers to Adam as a real historical being in Matthew.
In Genesis 3:20, Adam "called his wife's name Eve, because she was the mother of all the living."
There is of course also several geneologies in the Bible, some that are traced back to Adam. Geneologies of course, more then imply REAL HISTORICAL PEOPLE. The Bible also documents descendants of Cain by some generations and descendants of Seth all the way through the Old Testament and down to Jesus. The Bible also states that Adam and Eve had "other sons and daughters". Genesis 10–11 illustrates who and where several of the descendants lived. Genetic studies today have traced people back to these same areas and three women, presumably the three daughter in laws of Noah.
Thus it is clear from the Bible that they were real historical people AND that they are the ancestors of ALL human beings.
Not only the Bible, but EVERY or nearly every ancient culture has a story about the ORIGINAL HUMAN COUPLE of whom usually have the name Adam and Eve. How would all these ancient stories all over the world have the same originating couple? Because they really are the same originating couple. The ancient Chinese story of Adam and Eve is all in Chinese characters with pictures and words that have the EXACT SAME STORY AND names in their language: Adam created from the dust of the earth, Eve created later from her side. The serpent, the tree, the sin... They also have the worldwide flood story and the Tower of Babel. The first Chinese ruler claimed to be the grandson of Noah. Every year they sacrificed to the ONE TRUE GOD.
Ancient Egyptian also have these same three stories, and the Cain and Abel as well, and their first ruler is also a grandson of Noah.
Ancient India, Aztecs, and many other ancient groups have Adam and Eve story. Even more have the Tower of Babel. The worldwide flood is EVERYWHERE.
It is obvious to anyone who knows ancient history that these stories MUST be based on true events. They couldn't be ALL OVER the ancient world with the same details unless they were.
Forget about the atheistic fairy tale of macroevolution, false dating methods yielding millions of years, and their philosophy of origins. That is why you are confused probably.
Microevolution, growth and change WITHIN reproducible kinds is scientific. So is natural selection, adaptation... But none of that proves or even indicates evolution outside of genetic boundaries of beings. Cats evolve and change, but they are always cats. Ditto for dogs. Ditto for bears. Ditto for humans. There are no common ancestors outside of these boundaries. There are WITHIN these boundaries.
Ignore revised and bogus history and study the Bible and ancient history where people recorded true events rather then people thousands of years later censoring out much ancient history and revising the world and human history to fit their preconceived notions of how things MUST be without a God.
God created this world, the whole universe. Through his word (who is Jesus, see John 1:1) everything came into existence. You don't need to pretend that you understand HOW this happened. This is such a miraculous event that neither the words in Genesis nor science can explain it in a way we can really grasp what that means, what LIFE means, what it means to be built in his image.
When you accept this simple truth and continue reading you'll see that the bible in it's whole is about God's history with mankind, starting with one man and his wife (Adam and Eve) who chose not to obey (because they had free will), over one family (Noah) to a nation (through Abraham) that again and again left the right path, to Jesus who died as atonement for our sins, and who sent his disciples to the whole world to spread the good news.
If you look at the bible with the whole picture in mind it's not confusing. You'll see that God keeps his promises, he's faithful, and he'll reach his goal.
And this almighty God, the creator of everything, loves you so much that he wants to have a close relationship with you and he wants you to be his temple and give you his Spirit.
There is no need to pretend to understand the two creation stories in Genesis - not when there is a simple explanation.
What is now the second creation story (Genesis 2:4b-25) was actually written by an anonymous author now known as the Yahwist, early in the first millennium BCE. What is now the first creation story (Genesis 1:1–2:4a) was written centuries later, during the Babylonian Exile, by another anonymous author now known as the Priestly Source. They differ in content and theology because Jewish perceptions of their God had undergone many changes over the centuries.
For example, the Yahwist's God could not create living things out of nothing, but created Adam and the animals out of moist earth and created Eve out of a rib taken from Adam; the Priestly Source's God Almighty simply spoke things into existence.
In the Yahwist's account of the Garden of Eden, we read that God walked in the garden in the cool of the day (Genesis 3:8) and talked face to face with Adam and Eve. On the other hand, no one could see the face of Priestly Source's God and live.
Both stories are creation myths, developed at different points in Jewish history, so there is no point in pretending to believe either one. Hopefully, my explanation will help you to understand them.
The Bible is really confusing me, most especially the Genesis (creation story). Should I just pretend like I understood?
The creations that occur in Genesis 1–3 are actually threefold, as few recognize the creation that needed to occur after Adam and Eve were removed from Eden.
When God was separating Darkness from Light, He was separating the rebels from the heavenly hosts, picking out the 1/3 of the population that was supporting Lucifer's bid for the throne. (Rev 12:9 and 12:4) The first part of this creation was to create a place to cast these rebels into earth (hell). It is a place in the same dimension as heaven, in the ethereal world.
Once the fallen were ready for redemption, God created Eden, a garden in the highest reaches of Hell, a place called Paradise. Adam and Eve, two of the fallen Elders of Heaven (Rev 4:4) were chosen as a proxy for the fallen. If they could resist Lucifer (The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil), then the fallen would all be saved. But we know this failed.
Here is where the third part of creation occurs. To create a test for all the fallen, not just their proxy, God needed to create the material world. Since this is spiritual story, the 13.7 billion years it took to do this does not even deserve a new paragraph. Now we continue our story with Adam and Eve incarnated as humans on earth. From Genesis 5 we see that Adam ended up spending 930 years in total as a human before he relearned his virtue. It is interesting to note that he was the first enlightened man, but not the first to finish his time on earth. That was Enos who spent a total of 905 years on earth as a human.
We know that God did not create the world in seven days, it took most of the past 13.7 billion years to create a place for man to live. We also know that much of the bible has been touched by the forces of rhetoric, but like the works of Plato, there is still wisdom for the enlightened reader. So, what was Salomon trying to tell us about these seven days?
There are two beginnings in the bible, one in Genesis and one in John. Since genesis talks about darkness in the beginning, I theorize that this beginning was the beginning of the restoration, when light was separated from darkness and the dragon was expelled with his followers. The beginning in John is therefore the beginning of the ethereal world, which happened very long before the fall.
Since the writing of Genesis though, God has not yet rested and all is not yet good. So, whatever the seven days represent, we have not yet reached day seven. By my estimation, we are somewhere into the sixth day or the sixth phase of the restoration. For the portion of this seven-part plan that occurs on earth, we are 13.7 billion years into a 17.7 billion year story. I would estimate that we are in the afternoon of the sixth day.
In the earlier days of the restoration plan, the image of water seems to be very prominent. The Greeks named the god of the bitter sea Poseidon and the Romans called him Neptune. These are just many of the names given to the fallen Spirit of God, Lucifer – the dragon.
How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! (Isaiah 14:12 KJV)
The bitter sea symbolizes the multitudes that had fallen and I am afraid it is an enormity that is hard to grasp: one third of infinity is still infinite. But there are signs of positive progress. At least one of the two fallen female Spirits of God has climbed out of the bitter sea and started her own restoration. The Greeks called her Aphrodite and Romans Venus. On the cover of this book she is depicted being born into this world and emerging from the bitter sea.
In Plato's Symposium, the characters discuss the differences between Aphrodite Urania, meaning "Heavenly Aphrodite," and Aphrodite Pandemos or "Common Aphrodite." Heavenly Aphrodite is the daughter of Uranos. She inspires the love between two [intelligent] men and the love of learning and wisdom. Men who are under the spell of Common Aphrodite, however, have no preference between loving women or men. Interested in the body and not the soul, their love is base and uninspired.[i]
With Plato's help, we can see the reason behind the various personalities attributed to Aphrodite. One personality reflects her original uncorrupted character, while the others are a result of her following Poseidon into the bitter sea. During the many eons she spent there, she forgets the love of the true Eros. To break free from Poseidon and emerge from the bitter sea required great will and many steps. Her personality became wiser as time went on, but she has always been associated with love. Whereas the other fallen female Spirit of God has been consistently seen as a warrior: Athena.
The bible says that Eve was made from a rib, and I suggest she was made from one of the false ribs, as was Adam. That is, two of the ten fallen elders were the first pioneers to attempt their path of restoration. The first attempt was made in Paradise, in the ethereal world. It was after they failed, that the material world was created, created to provide a sure path of restoration to bring all the fallen back home.
The beginning in John occurred long ago, before the creation of the inhabitants of Olympia and the fall of one third of them occurred in the ethereal world. The beginning of the restoration occurred in the ethereal world until it was determined that a longer road was needed to restore all of the fallen, including the prodigal son – the light bearer, Lucifer. The big bang occurred at the end of Genesis 3 and the story continues when Adam and Eve are incarnated on the earth after being ejected from Paradise in the ethereal world.

I hope this makes things clearer.
The Genesis story is a 12-grade-level reading assignment. It has to do with authority and responsibility and law and all sorts of big brain esoteric stuff.
Basically, two tribes (the "Adam" tribe and the "Eve" tribe) first realized they could talk to each other and this caused all sorts of confusion because they couldn't communicate perfectly. The guys in charge ("god") said NOT to eat the fruit, and all they heard was "eat the fruit." (They missed that one word "not:" NOT to eat the fruit.)
Since "Adam" and "Eve" were two tribes of humans (NOT one man and one woman) their kids did NOT have incest.
Despite what some other sects of Christianity might say.
