What happened to Manstein during World War Two?
He was arrested in August 45 and send to the British POW camp at Luneburg
After the initial trails where the high command of the Whermacht was judged to an illegal body, he was considered for war crimes trial
He was sent to a prison camp in south wales and held while a decision was made
He was sen back to Germany in 1949 to face 17 charges of war crimes, he was found guilty of 9 of the charged and was sentenced to 18 years
There was a subsequent campaign to release him and he was release in 1953 he returned to live in Germany and wrote him memoirs
In 1955 he advised the West German Government on the establishment of the Bundswher
He died in 1973 of a stroke age 85
