What is South Africa's grassland called?

It is commonly called the Veld in South Africa , an Afrikaans word of Dutch origin.
In the rest of the English speaking world it is commonly referred to as the savanna. It would be strange to hear a South African refer to the dry scrubland as the "savanna".

The South African grassland is called the Highveld. The Highveld covers the Witwatersrand (southern Gauteng province) en the northern and eastern part of the Free State province and the country of Lesotho.
