What is the best unusual business advice you received?
When I was 17 years old. I started working in my family restaurant. I used behave with the labor as they are my family member and the guys would take advantage of that. Which was bad for the business, like they would go away without telling me and if there's an order we would have to wait for the worker to come and work. Sometimes they would show up drunk and thought that it's alright nothing would happen. Then one day a business owner who had a shop right in front of my restaurant advised me something (he knew about my situation as I used to discuss my daily struggles with him rather then my family members as I wanted to prove to them that I can handle any situation on my own) that I won't forget my whole life. He said "Even if you give a liquor bottle a day and a women to labor still they won't be loyal to you. They are only loyal to the money you give them not the immense respect and care that you do and show them". That changed my perspective towards dealing with the workers.
Just a Background about the workers:
Those workers in India were not educated and come from families who cooks for generations. They knew how to manipulate owners to earn maximum and violate resources provided to them.
So one day a worker showed up drunk at my restaurant and behaved somewhat badly with me and thought nothing would happen as I was a kid in there heads. I called everybody who worked in the restaurant for a meeting and fired him in front of every one . Before firing him I settled his account with the restaurant. Usually in other restaurant if someone fires a worker, they hold the pay for 2 weeks to a month. I did not want that to happen to any worker and cleared his dues.
From then on everybody started behaving respectfully and kept there random shit to themselves and went on to work for what they were paid for without creating any complications for me.
