What medications are the best for OCD and bipolar mix?
The best medications for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder are the SSRI's and Tricyclic antidepressants. However these have to be prescribed with caution in people with bipolar disorder and always in conjunction with a mood stabilizer or can cause mania and psychosis or manic flipping.
Some people have reported improvement in obsessive compulsive disorder with low dose aripiprazole which acts is a mood stabiliser and second and second generation antipsychotic. Geodon and Latuda are also second generation antipsychotics which can be useful for both bipolar disorder and OCD. SSRI's can be prescribed in conjunction with aripiprazole in patients with OCD and bipolar disorder as aripiprazole ( abilify) prevents manic flipping. Wellbutrin can also be useful for OCD and has less potential to induce mania that SSRI's
Supplements such as acetylcysteine and inositol have been found to be useful for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and do not cause mania . There are many different types of OCD and different types of bipolar disorder . Every individual is different and careful medication titration is required to effectively treat OCD and depression but avoid mania.
