Why do people debate over whether or not being gay is a choice and would it really make a difference if it was or was not?

The science is already pretty closed on this. People are born gay. Same as people are born straight. Everyone already knows this. No one wonders what sort of person they find sexually attractive; their body and sexuality tells them.

So why the debate?

Some people, and generally these are ultra religious people, consider homosexuality a sin. For some it seems one of the worst sins. Have a look on Quora for discussions about being gay and you'll find lots of hate. Try can you be a gay Christian or Muslim and there's lots people saying "no". Then have a look at what should happen to religious people who don't give to charity, help the needy, visit the sick, or show compassion. You won't find much. For many religious people they can't find anything more productive to do with their faith than condemn homosexuality.

But, if people are born gay, then their God must have made them that way. So either God actually doesn't care about homosexuality, made a mistake or doesn't exist.

None of these three work so the only option left is being gay is a choice. Never mind that they didn't choice their sexuality. Never mind that there is no reason for a straight person to choose a "lifestyle" that can cause them huge problems, get them ostracised or in some places imprisoned or executed. Never mind that gay people repeatedly say when asked "I didn't make a choice". No, you ignore the facts and maintain the idea that supports your world view.

The fact remains that being gay isn't a choice, but even if it was, what's it got to do with any one else.

Most men worry about their own bellies and other people's souls, when we all ought to be worried about our own souls and other people's bellies.
